In 1937, this art deco terminal was a bold architectural statement for
rural New Hampshire. Now preservationists and aviators find common
interest in its contemporary conversion and re-construction as the
Aviation Museum of New Hampshire. With unprecedented growth of
Manchester Airport, how lucky we are to save The 1937-Terminal from the
wrecker’s ball. This icon of New Hampshire’s aviation history will be
available for public use when we raise the 1.1 million dollars needed to
convert the facility into a museum and educational center.
Students and adults will
learn how Merit Bean, World War I veteran and UNH graduate,
provided essential services to logging companies by establishing
eleven airports in the White Mountains…how an open-cockpit
Curtiss Mountain Oriole delivered delicacies to the guests at
the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel…how Shirley Mahn from Whitefield
rescued hikers and accident victims throughout the entire
state…and how Joe Brigham long kept the Old Man on the Mountain!
The first aviators in New
Hampshire helped to bring cultural, economic, intellectual and
recreational opportunities to the Granite State. Now their
legacy will be preserved in this historic terminal. In the
Aviation Museum of New Hampshire managed by the New Hampshire
Aviation Historical Society, the lives of those who wrote
aviation history will once again inspire us.
Pioneers, adventurers and
private citizens are all part of New Hampshire’s proud aviation legacy.
Together with their heroic contributions to Granite State history and
your financial support, we will continue to “share the dream” that
began with powered flight in 1903.
