Last year the Robert and Karin Finlay Foundation pledged $75,000 to
Historical Societies, Museums, and Libraries throughout the state of New
Hampshire. Jack Ferns and Steve Lord represented the NHAHS at a Press
Conference/luncheon where Mr. Finlay addressed a large number of guests
from various NH cities and towns that represented their respective
organizations. During the press conference Mr. Finlay commented that he
sees membership as the key avenue through which these culturally vital,
yet often under-funded non-profits, can increase their reach and
stability. As a result, he has offered $25,000 to each historical
society, museum, and library in the state with the largest increase in
membership between November 1, 2007 and October 31, 2008.
The NHAHS could not agree with Mr. Finlay more. Membership is key
to the stability of our society and the future of our most prized
possession, the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire. Accordingly, the NHAHS
has decided to rise to the challenge and do whatever possible within our
limited means to increase the membership of the society. There are over
100 organizations throughout the state that are competing for this prize
money. However, the awards are not based on the number of new members
alone. The Challenge is based on a formula that also takes into
consideration the largest percentage increase in membership as well.
This is where our relatively new
existence and small membership base will help. Based on this
information, the NHAHS Membership Committee has set a goal of 100%
increase in membership, which is equivalent to 255 new members. As we
have limited resources one simple way of reaching this goal is by
requesting every NHAHS member to recruit at least one new member.
Letters and e-mails have been sent out to our membership base making
this request. In addition, a membership kiosk has been setup in the
museum and will travel to society functions throughout the year to
promote the Finlay Challenge.
With
the efforts that are being put forth by the membership committee and our
existing membership base, we have a good chance of winning the Finlay
Challenge. Regardless of the outcome, we are certain this challenge and
associated membership drive will be a success as we are confident it
will help us increasing our membership base well beyond what we would
have under normal circumstances.
