The Legend of Pancho Barnes and The Happy Bottom Riding Club

February 24, 2017, 7 PM, At the Museum

This is a video documentary profile of one of the most colorful and accomplished female pilots of the early 20th Century. Florence ''Pancho'' Barnes became the first female stunt pilot in Hollywood in 1929 and shattered Amelia Earhart's air speed record in 1930. In the 1940's and 50's, Pancho entertained the best test pilots in the world - men with the right stuff - at her ''Happy Bottom Riding Club'' guest ranch near Edwards Air Force Base.

PanchoBarnesWhen Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the rocket-powered Bell X-1 in 1947, he and his team partied with Pancho. A friend of the fast and the famous, Pancho Barnes was a swaggering, forceful woman whose exploits and accomplishments are truly the stuff of legend.

This movie will be shown at the Aviation Museum of NH on February 24th at 7 PM.  This will be a fun night celebrating the life of a larger than life Aviatrix and the world famous test pilots who became her family!  Seating is limited so purchase your tickets early.

A charismatic figure featured in Tom Wolfe's book The Right Stuff, Florence "Pancho" Barnes was a tough and fearless aviatrix. Just before WWII she opened a ranch near Edwards Air Force Base that became a famous -- some would say notorious -- hangout for test pilots and movie stars. Known as the "Happy Bottom Riding Club", it became the epicenter of the aviation world during the early jet age. Chuck Yeager, Howard Hughes, and Jimmy Doolittle caroused in the bar. The Club's destruction by fire in 1953 is seen by many to mark the end of a Golden Era in post-WWII aviation. In the same fashion Pancho herself has become a legend, a fascinating yet enigmatic icon whose swagger is often celebrated, but whose story has been largely unknown - until now.  DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN THE FACINATING LIFE STORY OF A TRUE AVIATION ICON!
