Slusser Aviation Learning Center (SALC)

In September, 2009 the New Hampshire Aviation Historical Society was honored with a $1 million gift from members Eugene and Anne Slusser of Hopkinton. The purpose of the gift is to establish the Slusser Aviation Learning Center (SALC) to be built adjacent to the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire, which the society operates on the east side of the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

Groundbreaking for the Slusser Aviation Learning Center at the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire happened Thursday, May 13th at 11 a.m. Speakers included representatives of the New Hampshire Aviation Historical Society, City of Manchester, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and the Federal Aviation Administration.

"This is obviously an exciting time for the society and for the management of Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, owner of the site and a strong supporter of the Museum," said Jack Ferns, building committee chair. "The Slusser's gift has set the ball in motion. Their vision to inspire young minds with a sense of awe for the aviation field is a timeless gift for generations to come."

A building committee, led by Gene Slusser as honorary chair, Jack Ferns as chair, Pat Duffy as financial adviser, along with appointed members of the NHAHS board and membership, has been working since late last year to plan the new center. The professional design team is led by Sheer, McCrystal, Paulson Architects with the contractor, Milestone Engineering and Contracting. Wondercabinet is working with the committee to develop high quality, interactive exhibits.

SALC will be used by students of all ages to learn the science and wonder of aviation, as well as its history in New Hampshire. The groundbreaking started a one-year construction process for both the building and exhibits.  The schedule calls for the building to be complete by 11/30/10, exhibits to be fabricated and moved in through mid-March, 2011, a "soft opening" the end of March, 2011, and a grand opening May, 2011.
