$1 Million Slusser Avaiation Learning Center Donation to NHAHS

On September 18, 2009, the New Hampshire Aviation Historical Society announced a $1 million donation given by Eugene and Anne Slusser of Hopkinton, NH. The gift is designated toward development of the Slusser Aviation Learning Center that will be built adjacent to the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire, located at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

The announcement was made at the Society’s 9th annual fundraising gala and silent auction, held Friday September 18, 2009, at the Derryfield Country Club in Manchester.

At the age of 15, Eugene Slusser became the youngest pilot of his time. He has always had a passion for aviation, and even now at 87, Slusser owns an airplane and still enjoys flying.

Slusser studied physics at the University of Denver and worked at MIT where he met his wife, Anne. In 1958, the Slusser’s moved to Hopkinton, NH to start Aerotronic Associates, an electronics testing manufacturer. Nearly 30 years later the company was sold and the Slusser’s have since dedicated themselves to community philanthropy. They have donated more than $4 million to New Hampshire causes, including Concord Hospital’s Payson Center for Cancer Care, Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, the Slusser Senior Center in Hopkinton, and several others.

Slusser said he and his wife, Anne, have always wanted to give back to the community they love so much and hope to inspire the young and old of New Hampshire by giving the gift of discovery. Their donation, he added, is to provide a place for individuals and families to share his passion for aviation, to explore the state’s aviation history, and to learn about aviation. The Slusser Aviation Learning Center will complement the 1937 air terminal which houses The Aviation Museum of New Hampshire. The new building will provide more space to display the state’s aviation history, and accommodate interactive exhibits, meeting and classroom space.

2009 Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour - September 25 through 28, 2009

The 2009 Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour can only be described as a howling success. On Sunday, in spite of mother nature failing to accede to our weather demands, it rained. Noneless, we managed to draw over 1,100 visitors to the museum over the four day period from September 25th through 28th.

Kudo's to our volunteers and to the Londonderry squadron of the CAP for the yeoman duties they performed in guiding tours through the museum and parking cars, and to all the model airplane clubs that exhibited their creations, and the NHANG for their survival gear display.

NHAHS Given Preservation Award

The award was presented on Thursday, May 7 at a dinner at the Center of New Hampshire-Radisson Hotel in Manchester.

Saturdays at the Museum

Saturday presentations at the museum have continued to attract standing room only crowds. During the Ploesti presentation on April 18, 2009, we were honored by the presence of NHAHS member Russell Page, who took part in the raid as a flight engineer/top turret gunner on the B-24, “Hadley's Harem”. Here is a photo of him alongside a lithograph he donated to the museum, showing Hadley's Harem during the raid on the Ploesti oil fields on August 1, 1943.
